Q: Can you use your dog’s pee in an online bought drug test?
im brainstorming here i need help.

A: No…go to http://www.marijuana.com/forum

Q: Heart Guard and Advantix?? Is it true if I purchase these drugs online, like drfostersmith.com or petmeds.com
and my dog comes down with something, those websites don’t guarantee it/? My vet said that if i purchase it from her office, then it is guaranteed if anything happens…..

what is your belief??

A: That is correct. If you buy heartworm prevention or any other drug over the internet it is not guaranteed, therefore if your dog comes up with heartworms while on these meds then the treatment will come out of your pocket. Only if these drugs are purchased by and under the supervision of a veterinarian that the guarantee is upheld. This is because the drug companies have no idea who works at petmeds and other companies, so they may not be stored or delivered properly. Drug companies will only trust “professionals” AKA your local vet. So, although you can get your drugs cheaper and sent to your door, it may end up being cheaper if you buy them at your vet and dont have to pay 5-600 dollars if your pet comes up with heartworms.

Q: Has anyone had any problems with a dog on Rimadyl?
Hi everyone,

Seen a few articles online about dogs that have serious problems while taking Rimadyl, the anti-inflammatory drug. My dog was on it for 2 years (perhaps 3) and he never had any adverse effects from the drug, and I thought it was widely prescribed, so this surprised me. Have any of you experienced problems with a dog prescribed Rimadyl? Were the consequences serious?

A: I have used it for short term and long term. My Lab has been on it for over 6 years. He is now 11.

My vet highly recommends a liver test twice a year for dogs who are on long term Rimadyl since it can affect the liver.

My Lab started showing signs of liver failure 6 months ago. His hips are bad. My vet recommended cutting back of the drug to slow the liver failure. So I did. His ability to function without a full dosage became worse.

Since I am a person who believe in quality of life vs quantity, I put him back on his regular dose. If it takes 6 months off his life so be it. At least he is not in as much pain.

Q: My dog is epileptic and requires phenobarbitol daily. Does anybody have a great way to get that drug cheaply?
I’m looking for an online drug company that ships to my home… one that accomodates drugs for canines.

A: Don’t do it!

Phenobarbital is a very hard drug to regulate. If a certain pill is just a small amount shy of the active ingredient it is supposed to contain, it will be ineffective. If it contains just a small amount too much, the dog can have permanent (and potentially life-threatening) side effects to the liver, kidneys, and brain.

Even under the best watchful care, it is very difficult for the best veterinarian to keep canine epilepsy under control. Getting your drugs from a less-than-reliable source only increases the risk that the pills are shoddily produced and tested, and that harmful side effects could occur. Get the Phenobarb from your vet, and take the dog in for routine blood tests to make sure the drugs have not caused liver damage, and that the blood levels of the drug are still sufficient to control the seizures.

Q: How much will it cost to treat my dog for Addison’s disease after the initial vet visit?
My dog was just diagnosed as having Addison’s disease. I know she will have to take pills or get shots for the rest of her life. I am just curious if anyone has the same problem with their dog, and what it ended up costing them a month. I have read some wildly different prices online. I need to know what to budget every month for the drugs. Thanks!
I was asking people who have had the same health issue with their dog or are directly familiar with the disorder to answer. It is useless to tell me that things are more expensive in New York than rural Idaho or that my vet can tell me. I am going to a new vet that I do not know well yet. I want answers from people that know what they are talking about please. I also have heard people were able to cut out the vet middleman and save some money on the pharmacy visits. Thank you for trying to help, but please don’t try if you don’t have a specific answer.

A: I strongly advise you to join the Canine Cushings Autoimmune group on Yahoogroups. They are a wealth of information for people such as you. I had a Cushings dog and learned a hundred times more from them than my vets.

I also ordered her meds through a Canadian pharmacy for about half what they are here in the US.

http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CanineCushings-AutoimmuneCare/

Best of luck to you

Q: What online pet pharmacies are reputable?
I have heard that some online pet pharmacies sell fake or not completely reputable drugs, does anyone know which to avoid? I need levothyroxine (thyroid meds) for my dog, so I really want the correct drug for the best price. Is petcarerx.com ok?

A: I have always used petmeds.com with no problem.

My vet doesn’t like that I use them but I have never found anything wrong with their products & they are less than buying direct from my vets office. One time I pruchased products from my vets office & when I got the Rymidal home & opened it I looked at the label & it was past it’s expiration date!!!

Q: Did the Vet mess up when caring for my dog? (More Detailed)?
Hello everyone.
Let me begin by explaining what happened. My dog was sitting on the window ledge when the screen gave way and the dog fell out the window two stories up. I ran outside around back where he fell and found him standing up, just limping, looked like his back leg might have been dislocated? We rushed the dog to the vet.
Heres what he had done
Examination- Emergency
Catheter- Venous- Peripheral
CBC/CHEM/ELECTROLYES/PCV/TS
RADIOGRAPH- 1 PLATE
PUMP- IV
Fluids- 1000ml
Oxygen- Cage- Per Hour
CPR- Closed ( What does this mean?)
Super Item- Euthanasia
Euthanasia.
Now after all this, the ladies came out and told me that everything looked okay and that it just seems like something is wrong with his back leg. They said they were going to keep him for another 45 minutes to see whats happens. Then the lady came out and asked if we would like to give the dog a shot to boost him up a little bit, didnt tell us about any side effects, did not tell us the drug was not approved for animals, I found that out by researching online. So without any information, I trusted the ladies and said yes, since they said he seemed ok, did not know it was a life decision I was making. After I said yes they gave him
BUPRENEX/ DILAUDID 25 to 60#, QTY= .25.
After they gave him this they came out and told us my dog was dead. None of this seems right.. I hope a Vet can help me out with this.. When I got the dog to bring him to the hospital, he was breathing fine, just seemed as though his back leg was hurt. The lady did all the tests, said everything seems good were just going to keep him for another 45 min, asked if she wanted us to give him a shot to boost him up, we say yes, he died.. Someone please help.. I loved my dog, and I did not see this coming…
The itemized bill I was told is in the correct order of how everything went. I do understand a dog that is 25 lbs should not have been sitting there, but he liked it cause he got fresh air, did not even think the screen would push out.. I understand he could of had some internal bleeding which is what I was scared of, when I found him he was standing on three legs holding his back leg in the air. I put my ear to his nose and he was breathing okay, and awake the whole time. They took him in the back office for awhile doing all these tests, the lady came out and said that everything seemed okay from the xrays ect, they asked if we would like to give him a shot to boost him up, did not realize it was a life or death decision so we said yes, then she comes out and tells us our dog died. I understand I can not blame this entirely on the vet, the accident I will take the blame for, the correct care not given I will blame them for. I researched the drug Buprenex, says that the drugs is not approved for animals, shouldnt they have told me this was going to be a science experiment? I don’t think its right for the vet to just give my dog a drug that is not approved, he was part of the family, not a rat for people to do experiments on.
Ok.. Well shouldnt they atleast tell me its not approved? I mean, since they told me everything seemed okay, I would of said not to give it to him, if I had known it was not approved for animals. He was a small dog, if this drug is as powerful as I read, in the shock he was in, getting this shot of buprenex might have just totally through him off.. Too much for him?

A: The Buprenex is an opiate based analgesic and the Dilaudid is a simple pain killer. This combination should have done exactly what they said, boost him up.

I’m not sure why Euthanasia would have been included in your itemized statement, you should definitely look into that.

Also, a 25 lbs dog falling 2 stories and suffering no internal bleeding is exceptionally rare. You could always take his body to another vet and have him autopsied to be completely sure this clinic didn’t screw you.

Sorry for your loss

Q: vet say my dog has kidney inflammation, needs antibiotics. is this the sole solution, any alternate medicine?
i found online some drugs with cranberry, uva ursi… can this treat the problem, or is that just an additional help and antibiotics is necessary. His BUN and CRea are high.
the problem is some antibiotics may be harmful, or too strong for him

A: Unfortunately, I would go with the antibiotics.
reason 1: kidneys are nothing to mess around with. is the health of your dog worth it?
cranberry and uva ursi are for slight irritations, not infections, and are meant to alleviate the pain, and irritation. it will not kill any infection.
reason 2: if his BUN and Crea (creatine?) levels are high, this is definitely reason to go with the antibiotics..
make sure you keep lots of fresh water on hand to flush out his/her system, and follow whatever directions your vet gives you. including FINISHING ALL the antibiotics….
reason 3: your vet went to vet school, got the degree. good enough reason for me. some may be better than others, but what else can you say?

Q: Is Mintox Plus dangerous for a dog?
So this morning, my dog was vomiting green bile. My mom gave it some Mintox Plus hoping for the vomit to subside. It went away, and she seems to be fine.

I didn’t know about this until now, but is it dangerous for a dog to consume Mintox Plus? I know it’s dangerous for Tylenol etc. But I have nothing about this online.

http://www.drugs.com/cdi/mintox-plus-chewable-tablets.html

Like I said, she seems to be fine, dancing around, and chasing after her toys. Any ideas?

Thanks

A: Looks fine to me. No asprin or tylenol in it, so that’s good, but probably not the best thing to use. I use Kaopectate for upset tummies.

Q: Hows this for online dating “who am I/what am I lookin for “?
Summing up who you are in 500 words or less. Sounds like an assignment I had once in middle school. But here I am. We both are. And there is nothing wrong with that (insert Jerry Sienfeld voice here). How can I not sound like im full of myself (im not) and still try and make you interested enough to find out what im like in person? Well, here goes…just gonna be honest. Quick, re-read that last statement. Yes, guys can be honest. Here I am. 36 (going to be 37 in October). Looks? You can judge from my picture. Its recent. Laid back when I need to be. Headstrong when I have to be. Been told i’m funny. Not in a ‘I make fun of peoples inadequacies” kinda funny. Not in a ‘im gonna try real hard to make it seem like i’m funny” kinda funny. Just funny. I like to talk. Re-read that bad boy again. Yes, a guy who likes to talk. I’m not a cryer who wants to have sharing sessions on the couch in front of the Lifetime movie of the week. But I can talk. The basics are these. Job(s) journalist, consultant, one time high school teacher and coach. But I dont think a job defines you. Not all teachers are ‘huggers’. There is more that I have accomplished in my life to make me who I am without my job or my house doing it. Favorite movie? Swingers. Back up? All the Presidents Men. Favorite book? A Seperate Peace. Kinda middle school, but I loved it every time I taught it. Back up: Into the Wild. Favorite football team? Browns (im from Cleveland) Family? Mom, younger brother. Both in Ohio. Dog? Yes. Married? Never have been. I believe in marraige. Just with the right person. Do I have kids? No. I love and want children.
So who am I looking for? A Diane Court-kinda girl. Dont know who it is? Google it and find out. But thats not looks. I’m mature enough now to know its so much better when you are with a girl who just wants to hang out then someone who wants you to tell her how great she looks. I heard once that its the best kind of relationship when you fall in love with a really good friend. The girl I want has to be her own person. She can be quirky and different. Thats great. A girl who lets me treat her like I want to. And likes that because she likes the way I treat her. A girl who appreciates me without feeling “owned”. Please dont smoke or do drugs. Want kids.
I’m not going to find this girl at a bar or a club. I know that. So here I am. You have to believe there are nice guys out there. I’m far from a pushover. I’m also not some guy that goes to strip clubs, drinks too much beer and never wants to commit.

A: Wow!! I’d definitely want to get to know you based on that!! Nicely done. Good luck!!

Q: Is blood work required every six months for dogs on phenylpropanolamine for incontinence?
We have a new vet who insists that blood work is required every six months for prescription of this drug. I can’t find any evidence that is true looking around online, and no one else I know whose dog has been on this medication required regular bloodwork. This is a new vet, and I’m suspicious that some of their policies are geared more toward profitability than health.

A: Try calling around to several good vets. Not low end vets, but vets who see people who don’t flinch at costs. I bet even the people at the front desk could tell you the answer as they do the scheduling and billing.

If your pet is on any long term medication, it’s generally good to do periodic screening – especially if the drug has any side effects.

Good luck to you and I hope you find the answer you need! : )

Q: My dog is almost 2 months late for her next dose of heartworm meds. What will happen?
The only reason this happened is because the vets here in TX have got together and they are now getting a sweet deal on shots and meds.

I took my dog to the vet to get her check-up and heartworm meds.
We ended up with a bill for $140 and were told to come back in 30 days for her next heartworm meds dose!

They said that the way they do it is to have us come in each time for her meds. So we would have to pay approx $25 for one dose of heartGuard and $45 for an office visit. $70 a month for 1 heartworm dosage.

I have called around to various types of vet clinics and gone online to try to order the product myself. However, once you get online, you still have to have your vet send the orders to allow you to purchase online. And vets do not want that. It kills their business. Their excuse? “We (vets) don’t know for sure just what the efficacy of those drugs are.” This ws the response I got from several vets. The others encouraged me to come in as they would not make me only get 1 dose at a time. They would sell me 3 doses, the first one to be given at the clinic. The 3 doses for her weight (56 pounds) is $69 through the vet. Plus the office visit which varied from $40 – $57.

I certainly do not want my dog to get heartworms. Fortunately, mosquitoes are not out yet where we live. I just cannot afford this. I am disabled and in a wheelchair. I cannot work and live off of my Social Security. And my dog is my service dog.

I am SO stressed out about this. I will be making a bit more money starting June 1 when school is out and I begin summer tutoring. But will she be safe ’til then?

Thanks for your help.

A: l am NOT in your country but in mine anyone who has a service dog and is disabled gets a huge amount off their vet bill.Contact Social Services and see if they can help as l am sure it would be the same in the USA where l suspect you live.
l work for a vet and can assure you none of the vets in this practice would dream of charging you this and the heart worm injection if not a puppy is one shot a year which costs all of around $25 depending on the weight of the dog. There is no consultation fee involved in one shot.If you are going in every year to have the dog’s usual boosters for parvo, distemper and kennel cough plus the heart worm l am shocked at this outrageous price.Ring every vet in your are aand compare all the prices and ask and do not be embarrassed that you are disable and have a service dog.
The other people to contact is the crowd that rain service dogs and get their views on this as l am sure they will be able to help in some way.l do not know if you are in a rabies area as those shots are not cheap and we do not rabies in my Country so know little re this.
Enquire at the Vet Association re this issue as you are being seriously overcharged and also some rescue shelters have vets who charge little to nothing for services rend ed so try that.
If l go into a vet and say l want a blood test and nothing else all l pay for is a blood test although some will try and hit you for a consultation and since walking in the door is a consultation?
Keep trying to find the injections for heart worm online everywhere even in the most unlikely places and l would get onto a Dog Forum and pose this question as few vets go onto this site l can assure you..
The cheapest way to give heart worm medication is the old fashioned one tablet per day and in my Country it is bought in Supermarkets and l know an awful lot of people who still stick to this regime as it is really really cheap so check on this as well as these tablets are not expensive at all and if you cannot get them cheaply as they c ome in packs of 50 or 100 l can get it for you and send it to you and will NOT charge postage but the actual cost of the tablets form the Supermarket and again believe me it is cheap and you put it into your dog’s food or shove it down his throat if you can with a piece of meat EVERY DAY of the year not just in mosquito season and that way you have coverage all year round and not up for a potential blood test before you start the course again if you fail to give your dog heart worm tabs in Winter.
l am still reeling in shock and cannot believe the cost to you on a pension.
As for your qquestion will the dog be safe till then l do know in your Country some people only heart worm in summer which is stupid. In my Country 2 months without heart worm medication means a blood test before any vet or anyone will allow this dog to resume the medication although just asked my Employer and his answer was if the dog has been continually on heart worm for years and has missed two months than he would feel the dog has enough anti bodies to be clear so in his opinion he thinks it would be OK to sstart re giving the tebs or injections but it is your decison as for me l w ould personally have the blood test as l take no chances, but that is me

Q: My husband treats me like a dog…. What do I do?
He bought be online from Osaka Japan, and I’ve been living in his upper-middle family home, in Banks, Alabama.
It’s a hick town, with 300 people. Because we’re so isolated, he thinks its necessary to tie me up, like a dog, and takes me on walks through the neighborhood and around the lake.

The natives just laugh, and make a passing comment, like “Here comes Josh, and his Japanese Poodle”. I’m an educated woman, but because I made some bad decisions in Japan (drugs), I was put into this business, and shipped off. Now I eat dog food, pee in a litter tray and have to pant at my husband, and play “dead”,

The whole town thinks I’m one big joke, and I’m starting to believe them. Should I just kill myself? I’ve got no money . . .
I wish I was lying, but no, no I am not.

Because 10% of the residents are below the poverty line, and my husband is quite affluent – people look up to him. They are extremelly rascit, and do not care about a depressed Asian woman whose rights are horribly destroyed. My husband would track me down, and kill me, if I ever spoke a word of the abuse. Suicide would be easier. For the both of us.

A: why don’t you go to the police and get away from him

Q: Has anyone ever heard of 1800petmeds or other reputable online pet med sites selling counterfit medicine?
Today I tried a new vet since moving back to NYC and they immediately started asking me what type of food am I feeling my dog and if she is on flea and tick preventative, To which i answered royal canin and yes she is on preventative meds. Then she was like do you get it from your vet or online. I said I get it online with a prescription. So she starts telling me that 1800ped meds sells counterfit drugs and they don’t guarantee their products and they(meaning the vet clinic) stand behind all the medicine they sell and if my dog had any reaction they would treat her for free, blah blah blah. I mean i’ve been using heartguard from my online store since she was a puppy and she’s never had a reaction. I was really turned off by them and don’t think I will use them again. I think they are just trying to boost their sales and are not really concerned with their patients or owners. But please let me know if I’m wrong.

A: Yes, they DO sell counterfeit drugs.

Just ask a few of our clients who have been royally screwed over by 1-800-petmeds. One of the dogs tested heartworm positive while they were taking heartworm prevention (Heartgard) from Pet Meds. Yikes!

Our hospital REFUSES to deal with these *unlicensed* online pharmacies because we care about our patients!

ADD: 1-800-Petmeds gets an estimated 80% of their meds from 3rd world countries who do not have any organizations (like the FDA) to set standards and check on manufacturing procedures…. pretty scary.
