Q: Can cops search place for drugs based on drug dogs sniffing it out?
Is it legal for cops to go to apartment complexes and have the dog sniff from door to door for illegal drugs. I can’t imagine how many people would have been busted at my apartment complex for pot, you can smell it almost all day. Lets say if they took the dogs everyday to apartment complexes, they would be busting like half the complex.

A: NO ABSOULTELY NOT. Dogs like the one you mentioned here drug sniffing dogs are not considered domesticated animals that every policemen are carrying them all the time. While walking or taking a stroll down the park. Police officers only bring these canine sniffing dogs every OPERATIONS like a raid on a drug den or warehouses or apartment etc. but not all the time.

POLICE OFFICERS esp. from DEA bring naturally dogs in order for the procedure to speed up and bringing dogs to help them find the drugs more easily that asking the suspects upon apprehension. Cops do not take these dogs while jogging and when the dogs smell something funny the cops call the entire police force and raid the poor hapless house and arrested all the occupants of the house because of the dog funny smell. NO THIS PROCEDURE IS STUPID and do not jive or work well with the police proper procedure or by the book. You are watching too many police movies lately?

Q: Do you know what people drugs dogs can safely take?
I know that Tylenol is a no no, but what can you give a dog for pain, diarhea, etc?

A: Here’s a site with dosage by weight of otc meds.

http://www.animalsunlimited.net/meds

Better than otc meds is herbals. There is no website for that though. I recommend you join one of the many Yahoo pet groups for that.

Q: Can Drug Dogs Detect Perscription Drugs?
My school randomly has drug dogs come in and sniff our bags and locker for drugs. I have ADHD though and sometimes have ritalin on me. Im worried that if im carring it and they come in that ill get in trouble for it.

A: A dogs can smell almost anything, they are trained to smell for specific things.
Depending on your school rules I imagine your prescription drug should be on file with the office.
Most drug dogs are not trained to look for prescription drugs.

Q: Do drug dogs become addicted to drugs?
Like dogs that sniff for cocaine, do they eventually become addicted?

A: They aren’t actually inhaling the cocaine. All the have to do is sniff the area around the vehicle or wherever they are sniffing for the drug. So no drug dogs don’t get addicted to drugs. But if a dog was actually sniffing cocaine, then i am sure (before it dies b/c of it) that it would get addicted.

Q: are sniffer dogs at customs there for sniffing explosives or drugs?
i heard that sniffer dogs vary. That they are either sniffer dogs for explosives or for drugs. Even with drugs, some dogs only are trained to only sniff out certain drugs. what kind of sniffer dogs are at the customs at the airports?
the dog i seen was a germain shepard.
will that tell me if the dog is a drug sniffer dog or a explosive and money finding one?

A: A detection dog can be trained to detect anything with a signature scent. The options are endless.

Dogs in airports can be trained for many things, although they are primarily trained to detect drugs, explosives or food. It is illegal to import certain kinds of food. At our airport, there is a beagle that detects 15 types of food, and a Griffin that detects explosives.

Dogs are NOT cross trained for drugs and explosives, it is one or the other. Items can retain the scen to drugs for a long time. If the explosive items or the package it is in had an odor of drugs, the dog could incorrectly signal as drugs. Not really a great idea.

No, the fact it was a German Shepherd does not narrow down what it was trained to detect.

I know, I met the Beagle and handler at Police week and fell in love (with the dog). For months I begged my BF to get us a Beagle. Good thing we didn’t, he ended up getting Hary, that would have made 4 dogs.

Q: Should drug-sniffing dogs be aloud to search campuses for drugs without any warrant?
i’m writing a persuasive paper and i need to convince my reader that the dogs should not be aloud to search student’s lockers, cars etc.

keep in mind that its not constitiutional but what are other reasons?

A: Fuck NO! it should not be aloud. Just like DUI check points and red light ticketing cameras should not be aloud. What other reason do you need besides Unconstitutional. What was the one thing Obama was sworn into protect from enemies foreign and domestic. The constitution. Ask Thomas Jefferson what other reasons it shouldn’t be allowed, you don’t need any other reason. They treat our kids the same as they treat our prisoners.

Q: How are drug-sniffing dogs trained to detect drugs? Are they mildly addicted?
I am not sure if a dog can smell something without inhaling minute particles of the substance. In the case of hard drugs like heroin etc, would that mean that the dog has a mild dependency?

Please answer if you know. If it’s just guessing, I can guess for myself. Thank you.

A: The key ingredient is a ball-crazy dog. You know the type; a dog that is
totaly nuts about chasing, catching, and otherwise frolicking with a tennis
ball. They find these dogs through a very scientific process whereby they
get a bunch of puppies together and throw tennis balls around until it becomes
apparent that one puppy is especially interested in ball-activities.

That puppy is rewarded with his very own ball, one scented with eau de cocaine
or eau de semtex, or whatever. They get these scents from a police-supply
outfit. They’re just smells, no narcotic/explosive properties, so don’t get
any ideas.

The puppy grows up with the scented ball. Whenever the dog is playing, it is
with the scented ball. If the dog seems pretty adept with scents, it might get
another ball with a different scent, but two seems to be the limit. Besides
just playing “catch,” and other doggie-sports, the dog eventually learns the
game “find your ball!”

Thats the funny part. When the dog goes charging around the airport and starts
clawing at your suitcase, he’s just looking for his stupid ball.

Q: Is it true that DRUG DOGS can overdose on the drug they are sniffing for?
I always thought they used the dogs because the drugs had no effect on them, but I was reading a book and it said the dogs could fatally overdose during a training session or during the real thing.

If this is so, why do we have drug dogs? Aren’t we putting the dog’s health at stake?

A: NEVER Surrender!- settle down. your a bit off.

yes a dog can OD. and ill tell you how.
my husband is a military cop, he works w/dog handlers every day. they do drug training all over the base. they plant a drug and test the dog in a “real life” situation to see how they perform.
SOMETIMES the packaging that the drug is in becomes busted OR the dog in it’s excitement chews at the package and this can lead to contamination. the dog is taken to the vet for immediate treatment and observation.
it’s a freak accident but it DOES happen.

Q: A drug dog smells drugs in a car and nobody is in it. Can a police officer get a search warrant?
I know a police officer can take a drug dog down a apartment building hallway to search it because its public property. If the dog smells drugs in a room the police officer can get a search warrant and search it for drugs. But. What if the police officer is walking down the street and the drug dog smells some drugs in a car and nobody is in it. Can the police get a search warrant to search the car?

A: He doesn’t need a warrant if it’s a car. He can just go ahead an tear it up.

Q: Whats the deal with drug dogs at bus stations?
A few friends and I are heading to new york city for the weekend from buffalo, and 1, ive never been to the city, 2 ive never taken a bus. I was just wondering how security is in the bus staitions in new york and Buffalo. We were planning on bringing a small bag of weed for the trip and i didnt know if there were gonna be dogs or what. I know its prolly not a good idea regardless but i just wanted to know.

A: They show up at random, so you never know if they’ll be there or not.

Q: Westminster and other Dog Shows:For Westminster ,are dogs given drugs to postpone their coming into heat?
Also, how do trainers keep their dogs’ sexual natures from coming into play at dog shows? With regards to number of entrants, are Westminster and other dog shows usually dominated by female or male dogs?

A: Some breeders may use these drugs.. but in general, no, they do not. These drugs have dangerous side effects and have been known to render a bitch sterile. Ussually, shows are planned around heat cycles.

In general, its preferred to show males.. you dont have to plan around a heat cycle.. and its also easier to keep a male in a show coat. Heat cycles cause changes to the coat, so its harder to maintain a show coat in a female.

The owners and handlers use a LOT of training to control these dogs.. show dogs must be handled and socialized often from a young age so they are accustomed to it.

Q: Do they make anti-anxiety drugs for dogs?
I have a shi-tzu that always whines and acts nervous.

A: Yes yes and YES! Go see your vet. They’ll hook you up with some meds. You can also look into holistic treatments and doggie day care. Your little kiddo may just have too much unspent energy!

Q: What are examples of jobs that working dogs do?
I know there are police dogs and rescue dogs, but what else do working dogs do? I have never known anyone that kept only working dogs. My parents worked as police, so I have seen drug dogs and K9 units, but those cops considered their dogs their pets as well, and treated them much like ordinary pet owners do. Is that how it is for all working dog owners? What exactly are the jobs they do?

A: Oh boy…

Service dogs, SAR, Therapy dogs, Guide dogs, Herding dogs, flock guardians, hunting dogs, protection/guard dogs, Bomb Detection, Drug Detection… I’m sure there’s more but I can’t think of any at the moment. Not all owners consider their working dogs as “pets”.

Q: How do or can airports (detectors and security checks) detect small amounts of illegal drugs?
For example, if some one (stupid) carried a few grams of an illegal drug like marjiuana through an airport and on a plane, would anyone ever know? Do they have special detectors or anything, besides drug dogs…they can find anything just about.
what if it is hidden on/in the body…

A: Visual and dogs.

Q: do police dogs/drug dogs get confused around police officers?
say for instance you have taken drugs off people during the early part of the shift, you have trace amounts on hands and cloths surely, and if you confiscate them your carrying them, then you end up elsewhere with drug dogs, do they just sit by you. i,m just curious.

A: Yes they do..

They are trained to detect drugs on any person and cannot tell a police officer from a member of public..

I did a drugs dog operation recently around the bars/club and had seized some cannabis..the dogs treat is a dog biscuit, the dog realised he was onto a good thing so kept coming up to me knowning i had the cannabis in my pocket and ” indicating” so the handler had to keep awarding him and i had to keep away from the dog..lol
